From Fear to Freedom: How Improv Helped Me Step Outside My Comfort Zone

If you’d told me a few years ago that I’d be standing in a circle with 22 adults, willingly doing improv acting, I would have laughed (awkwardly) and swiftly changed the subject.
But here we are.
As part of preparing for my upcoming book launch, I’ve been stretching myself in new ways, including joining a speaker’s club to grow my confidence and communication skills. It’s been exciting and nerve-wracking in equal measure. But nothing prepared me for this week’s surprise extra session, Improvisation training.
Yes. Improv, the very word filled me with dread!
I remember my school days. I hated drama, I wasn’t a confident teen, and the thought of being on show was not my thing. I didn’t feel “good” at it, and I certainly never imagined I’d return to anything remotely like it voluntarily. So, to find myself not only participating in an improv circle but actually enjoying it felt surreal.
And strangely... spiritual.
There was something compelling about connecting with others through the spontaneity of improv. You’re not worrying about how you look or whether you’re doing it “right”—you’re just present. Fully engaged. It demands deep listening, sharp focus, and letting go of control. That presence quiets the noise in your head. The fear, the doubt, the what-ifs they don’t stand a chance in the here and now.
That moment of stepping so far out of my comfort zone reminded me just how much growth lives on the other side of fear. And I want you to feel that too.
So here’s my invitation to you:
What’s one thing you’ve been avoiding because it feels uncomfortable, but could secretly be the key to your next confidence level?
If you're ready to explore that, grow your self-belief, and shake off the limiting stories, I’d love to work with you. Whether it’s speaking up, showing up, or stepping into your purpose, I’m here to support your journey because I’ve been there, and I get it. Contact me to learn more.
