Setting Healthy Boundaries & Protecting Your Energy
Sep 18, 2025
Let’s talk about something I know many of us, especially those juggling businesses, families, and a hundred invisible spinning plates, can relate to: protecting our energy and setting healthy boundaries.
As someone running a business and playing multiple roles in my life and business, I’m no stranger to burnout. In fact, just the other week, during my monthly therapist supervision session, I had a little “a-ha” moment that I think is worth sharing.
I found myself honestly telling my supervisor how drained I’d been feeling. And it hit me I don’t often stop to really acknowledge all that I’m holding. Between supporting clients, managing family dynamics, and preparing for a big life transition (my daughter turning 18 and heading off to university soon—cue proud tears and the occasional emotional wobble), I was running on low.
So what do I do to protect my energy and stay grounded when life gets busy? Here’s what helps me and if this resonates im hoping it may help you too.
I Check In With Myself
-
I use supervision and coaching as safe spaces to reflect, process, and let go.
-
I’ve learned that if I don’t stop to unpack what I’m carrying, I’ll end up dragging it all behind me like an overstuffed handbag (and we all know how painful those shoulder straps can get).
I Do Regular Body Scans
I notice physical signals like anxious flutters in my stomach or a tight chest and treat them as little red flags.
If my skin starts breaking out in eczema, that’s my body yelling, “Hey, slow down!” (Not ideal, but it gets the message across.)
I Set Boundaries, Unapologetically
Fridays are my sacred “me” days. No work, no guilt, just rest and reset.
I remind myself often: saying no isn’t rude it’s responsible. Saying yes to everything is how we end up on the fast track to exhaustion.
I Make Time for the Things That Fill Me Up
A good gym session, a catch-up with a friend, or cooking a wholesome meal for my family these aren’t luxuries; they’re necessities.
Cooking, in particular, is my happy place. Give me a recipe and a podcast, and I’m in my element.
Your turn……Why Not Create Your Own Self-Care Menu?
We’re often so good at caring for others, but how often do we sit down and ask, *What do I need today?
Try making your own “self-care menu”—a list of go-to activities that help you feel grounded, nourished, and recharged. Think of it like a takeaway menu… but for your soul. Mine includes:
-
Long walks in nature
-
No-phone mornings
-
Listening to a podcast
-
Day dreaming-Affording myself time to dream about the life I am creating
Your energy is precious. Protecting it isn’t selfish it’s a way of honouring yourself, your values, and your purpose. So this week, I invite you to check in, slow down, and remember: you don’t have to do it all.
What’s going on your self-care menu?
