If you’d told me years ago that I’d be signing a book deal with Hay House, I’d have laughed, possibly snorted, and then politely asked if you’d mistaken me for someone else. Because, honestly, that kind of thing was for other people—those with fancy literary connections, boundless confidence, and an unwavering belief that their words belonged on bookshelves around the world.
And yet, here we are. Book deal? Tick. Dreams coming true? You bet.
So, how does something that once seemed utterly impossible become a reality? How do you take a ‘wouldn’t it be nice’ thought and transform it into ‘OMG, I did it’? Well, my friend, grab a cuppa, settle in, and let’s talk mindset and strategy.
Step 1: Dare to Dream (Yes, REALLY Dream)
First things first: let yourself actually want the thing. I know, sounds obvious, but you’d be amazed at how many of us downplay our dreams before they’ve even had a chance to breathe. We tell ourselves we’re being ‘realistic’ or ‘practical’, when really, we’re just scared of being disappointed.
When I first entertained the idea of writing a book, my inner critic piped up with, “Who do you think you are?” (Inner critics can be such delightful company, can’t they?). But instead of shutting the dream down, I played with it. I let myself imagine it. And that’s where the magic starts—by giving yourself permission to want more.
Step 2: Adopt a ‘Why Not Me?’ Attitude
Once you’ve allowed the dream to exist, it’s time to shift your mindset from ‘I could never’ to ‘Why the hell not?’ Because, truly—why not you?
When I thought about writing a book, I didn’t have all the answers, but I did know one thing: other people had done it. And they weren’t mythical creatures with supernatural powers. They were just people who decided to go for it. If they could do it, why not me? Why not you?
Step 3: Reverse Engineer the Dream
Big dreams feel overwhelming when you stare at them in their entirety. Writing a book? Daunting. Getting a publisher? Terrifying. Knowing where to start? Pass me the biscuits.
But when you break it down into tiny, manageable steps? That’s when it becomes doable. I started by writing regularly. Then I explored the publishing process. I reached out to people who’d walked the path before me. I put myself in spaces where ‘people who write books’ hang out. Small steps, consistently taken, lead to giant leaps.
Step 4: Do the Inner Work (Spoiler: This is the Big One)
Your mindset will make or break you. Imposter syndrome, fear of failure, fear of success (oh yes, that’s a thing!)—all of it will rear its head the moment you start stepping towards something bigger.
For me, this meant actively working on my beliefs about what was possible. I had to challenge my ‘not good enough’ stories. I had to reframe rejection as redirection. And I had to keep showing up, even on the days when I felt like a fraud with a laptop. I used things like positive affirmations in my phone. I set reminders to pop up and remind me of my affirmations and this really helped me to work on my sub conscious mind. If you’re not working on your inner world, no amount of strategy will save you. Your dream will only grow as much as you do.
Step 5: Take Aligned Action (Even When It’s Scary)
At some point, you have to move from dreaming to doing. And this bit? It’s uncomfortable. You’ll have to put yourself out there, face rejection, and risk looking like a muppet. (I say this from experience.) I submitted that first book proposal with so much anticipation only to be told it was not a goer, and I could have quit then, but I didn’t I started again I revisited my ideas and improved them based on the feedback I was given.
If you’re waiting to feel ‘ready’? You’ll be waiting forever. Clarity and confidence come after action, not before it.
Step 6: Trust the Process (Even When It Feels Like Nothing’s Happening)
The journey to making big dreams happen isn’t linear. There will be moments when you feel stuck, when you doubt yourself, when you’re convinced the universe must’ve lost your application for greatness. But keep going.
Rejections are just redirections. Delays are just the universe working behind the scenes. And sometimes, the things you think are setbacks are actually setups for something even better.
Step 7: Celebrate Every Win (No Matter How Small)
Did you write 500 words? Brilliant. Did you send that scary email? Amazing. Did you not quit even when you really, really wanted to? Champagne-worthy. When I finally got my book deal, it wasn’t because of one massive leap—it was because of a hundred small ones. Every step matters. Acknowledge them.
Final Thoughts: Your Dreams are Waiting for You
If you take one thing away from this, let it be this: your dreams are possible. The fact that they exist inside you means they’re meant for you. And with the right mindset, the right steps, and a bit of stubborn determination, you’ll get there.
So, go on then. What’s your wild dream? And more importantly—what’s your next step towards making it real?
